I never thought I'd be doing this. Writing a blog. Or, for that matter, owning an "online store." But here we are! I never actually "saw" myself that way. But then again, when I decided to be a visual artist I had no idea how much I'd end up of talking about my work, my inspirations and my life. Somehow, surprisingly to me, the best of what I create, inspired by the world and my imagination, has ended up being of interest to others. This is a great bonus because I'd probably be doing what I'm doing regardless. It's my passion and I really cannot help it. It's what I'm meant to do. I love to create things that bring beauty into peoples lives everyday.
I've been making art since I was a kid but it wasn't until I was in my last year at the Art Institute of Chicago that I started combining my various skills: metal sculpture, weaving, interior architecture and installation. From this foundation study, "furniture-like" art evolved from non-functional to more functional pieces. 22 years later, my name is known more for my product than anything else and I hope 22 years from now, if I'm lucky, I'll still be creating beautiful pieces that blur the lines between art and design.
My last eight years of work, pursuing traditional techniques, authentic materials and skilled artisans to collaborate with in Mexico, has been exhilarating and challenging. It's required stamina, patience and cash. All of these (drained and replenished numerous times) a constant test of where I would go and what I would do (and not do) to pursue my vision.
Multi-city (and multi-village) road trips, learning to hear and speak a new language and struggling to grasp the nuances of another culture has made life very interesting. Amidst the simultaneous richness and simplicity of the people I've met and worked with I continue to be amazed and inspired everyday by what we can all do together with tenacity and a lot of luck! The contents of my shop are the fruits of that labor. Everything is artist designed and artisan made, each piece unique and limited edition. As blogs go, this is just the beginning. I hope you'll continue to take this journey with me.
Nos vemos pronto,
Laura
